Bombin' With Banksy and Co

Morning Lecture

16 November 2022

Bombin' With Banksy and Co

Portrait of David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust, Brixton mural by James Cochran, 2013

This lecture gets up close and personal with the dynamic east London street art scene. You’ll see art on the walls, the sides of buildings and pavements.

Pepe Martinez shows us work by Banksy, quite possibly the most famous living street artist in the world, as well as street art by Ben Eine whose piece “Twenty First Century City” was recently presented by then Prime Minister David Cameron to Barack Obama. We will also see work by Shepherd Fairey, the most celebrated street artist working in the US today, known around the world for his Obey and Hope campaigns, and the Australian James Cochran, famous for his pointillist-style portrait of David Bowie in Brixton.

Discover how the huge growth and popularity of Street Art is reflected in the astonishing transformation of once seedy and deprived areas into some of the most vibrant, most fashionable, most happening neighbourhoods in London.

Our Speaker Pepe Martinez is a Londoner, born and bred. He thinks it is one of the greatest cities in the world. He qualified as a London Blue Badge tourist guide in 2011, graduating at the top of his class.

Since qualifying he has specialised in the graffiti and street art of East London. He often combines a lecture with a walk of street art and graffiti and can even organise a practical spray session to finish, giving his groups an opportunity to have a go at creating their own works, having been inspired by the street art they've seen on their tour.

In a previous life Pepe was a Stage Manager and still tries to get to as many shows as he can. For 15 years he worked as a Tour Manager, travelling extensively all over the world.
