SPREAD A LITTLE HAPPINESS
THE STORY OF THE BRITISH MUSICAL
Speaker:
Malcolm Jones
The British Musical was triumphant in the 1930s, when the musicals of Coward and Novello dominated the West End - until the arrival of Oklahoma! in 1948 changed everything. For 30 years audiences flocked to see the big American musicals of Rodgers & Hammerstein and others. But British musicals still had moments of great success. Julian Slade, Sandy Wilson, David Heneker and Lionel Bart had hugely successful shows. Then, in the 1970s and 80s, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice re-established the British musical as a major global force.
